Solar panel manufacturers promise 25-year lifespans and guarantee 80% output at Year 25. What they do not tell you is how much that trajectory changes based on how the panels are maintained.

The 25-Year Promise — and the Reality

Solar panel manufacturers promise 25-year lifespans and guarantee that panels will produce at least 80% of rated power at the end of Year 25. What they do not tell you is how much that trajectory changes based on how the panels are maintained.

How Degradation Works

1. Light-Induced Degradation (LID)

Occurs in the first few months of operation. Monocrystalline panels lose 1–3% in the first year due to LID. This is normal and accounted for in manufacturer warranties.

2. Potential-Induced Degradation (PID)

Caused by voltage stress between the panel frame and cells. Can cause 10–30% power loss if not addressed. Proper earthing and night-time voltage equalization prevent PID.

3. EVA Browning and Delamination

The encapsulant material (EVA) yellows over time, reducing light transmission. Accelerated by UV exposure and moisture ingress. Proper junction box sealing and annual inspections catch early delamination before it spreads.

4. Cell Cracking (Micro-cracks)

Often caused by thermal stress, hail, poor installation, or maintenance personnel walking on panels. Each cracked cell contributes to performance loss and eventual hotspot formation.

5. Soiling-Accelerated Degradation

This is where maintenance directly affects long-term degradation. Bird droppings and industrial particulates create persistent hotspots that permanently damage cells.

For a 500kW plant, the difference between a well-maintained and poorly maintained degradation trajectory translates to Rs. 60–90 lakh in cumulative lost generation over 25 years.

How to Minimize Degradation

Regular Professional Cleaning

Eliminates persistent soiling hotspots before they cause permanent cell damage.

Annual Thermal Imaging

Identifies hotspots, bypass diode failures, and cell-level damage before they cascade. Our annual safety audits include full-plant thermal imaging.

PID Prevention

Proper system grounding and, for high-risk string configurations, PID recovery devices.

Monsoon Post-Season Inspection

Monsoon damage (water ingress, rust, cable insulation damage) significantly accelerates degradation if not caught in September–October.

Monitoring Degradation Over Time

The best way to track degradation on your specific plant is performance ratio (PR) trending. PR normalizes generation against irradiance, eliminating weather variation, so any downward trend in PR reflects true plant degradation.

SolarTrust monitoring platform tracks PR for every client site and flags when the PR trend deviates from the expected degradation curve.
