Solar AMC vs. Break-Fix: Which Model Saves More Money?

Most solar plant owners in India start with break-fix maintenance: wait for something to go wrong, then call someone to fix it. It feels like it saves money — until the numbers tell a very different story.

The Two Approaches to Solar Maintenance

Most solar plant owners in India start with break-fix maintenance: wait for something to go wrong, then call someone to fix it. It feels like it saves money — until the numbers tell a very different story.

An Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) is a proactive approach: fixed monthly or annual fee, scheduled preventive visits, remote monitoring, and emergency response included.

Break-fix is reactive: no contract, pay per incident, no scheduled maintenance.

Real Cost Comparison for a 100kW Commercial Plant

Break-Fix Model (Annual Costs)

ItemCost 1–2 inverter fault callsRs. 8,000–20,000 Emergency panel cleaning after soilingRs. 15,000–25,000 Connector/cable replacement after failureRs. 12,000–18,000 Performance loss from delayed response (avg. 2 weeks)Rs. 40,000–80,000 Total estimated annual costRs. 75,000–1,43,000

AMC Model (Annual Costs)

ItemCost Comprehensive AMC (quarterly visits + monitoring)Rs. 40,000–60,000 Emergency callouts (included in AMC)Rs. 0 Performance loss (proactive monitoring catches issues in 24–48h)Rs. 5,000–15,000 Total estimated annual costRs. 45,000–75,000

The numbers show AMC saves Rs. 30,000–70,000/year for a 100kW plant — and that is before accounting for the compounding benefit of prevented equipment failures.

The Hidden Cost Break-Fix Never Shows You

Inverter Failure Risk

A major inverter failure on a break-fix plant typically goes undetected for 3–7 days until the owner notices their electricity bill. That is 3–7 days of zero generation. For a 100kW plant in Delhi NCR, that is Rs. 15,000–35,000 of lost generation per week.

With an AMC and remote monitoring, the same inverter fault triggers an alert within 15 minutes and is escalated to an on-site team within 4 hours.

Warranty Implications

Most solar panel and inverter manufacturers require proof of regular documented maintenance to honor warranty claims. Break-fix maintenance, by definition, creates no maintenance trail. Our clients regularly see warranty claims accepted or rejected based solely on whether they can produce a maintenance log — something only an AMC provides systematically.

Compounding Degradation

Bird droppings and partial shading on dirty panels create hotspots — localized high-temperature zones that permanently reduce panel efficiency and, over time, crack cells. This damage is irreversible and not covered by standard panel warranties when caused by maintenance neglect.

When Break-Fix Might Make Sense

Break-fix is appropriate only for:

  • Systems under 5kW that are secondary to a grid connection
  • Plants in the final 1–2 years of their operational life where ROI on maintenance is marginal
  • Agricultural solar systems with very low generation value

For any commercial or industrial plant above 20kW where the electricity generation has real financial value, AMC consistently delivers better economics.

What a Good Solar AMC Should Include

Not all AMCs are equal. A comprehensive AMC should include:

  • Quarterly on-site visits with cleaning, inspection, and photo documentation
  • Monthly remote monitoring with performance reports
  • Emergency response within 4 hours for critical faults
  • Annual safety audit including thermal imaging
  • Service history log accessible via app or portal
  • Clear SLAs — response times, uptime guarantees, and escalation paths in writing
